Did that Volvo and that chevy pickup run? I like em!

ETS
02-26-2011, 07:10 PM
The Volvo ran and drove great, and was in awesome shape!! The guy was just moving farther than it would probably go. The guy said the Chevy ran and drove, but it had no fuel and a dead battery. The chevy definitely needed a lot of work...

This was an interesting one. 12 vehicles - Ranged from 1960's Saab's and Volvo's and a few "newer" ones (late 70's, early 80's). Most of them barely fit on the trailer because of the narrow wheel base, they rubbed all the way up! A few didn't even roll because the brakes were seized up so they sent a crew out to free them up. Paid pretty good, but we're still not sure it was worth the hassle of extra help we had to bring out plus another truck to help drag them around

They went to a Classic car dealer. These were a few from the showroom and the Volvo at the top is one we pulled from the weeds after they cleaned it up.

I do have a question... Are you strapping these cars with a hook through the mesh on the runners???

ETS
04-11-2011, 06:24 AM
Yes. Always next to a weld or under the angle iron cross section of the framing. Hoping to get some D-rings put on the trailer at some point, but this works just fine for now.

Careful with the mesh I was doing that for a while and it really weakens it. Mine seemed to just start coming apart all at one time.

Instead of d-rings, I was thinking about putting small holes down the side, between the DOT tape, to hook the ratchets to. I'm just not sure if that would affect the structural integrity of the trailer to much.

I would NOT drill holes in the side rail!!!!! Never remove metal it you dont have to! Use "D" rings or add a rub rail (if it wont make you over wide).

Mine has also just started to fall apart.... and I have never hooked straps to the mesh. I personally would not strap down this way and also would NOT drill any holes down the side... That will for sure weaken the trailer.

ETS

So the holes are a no then. I kinda thought so, I saw another trailer that had them, thought I'd ask.

I put a few in my old trailer to put motorcycle tie downs through.

On my old trailer I was going to buy a bunch of these and weld them on, width was not an issue on it. Now on the new trailer it would be too close, and that is all I would need is some DOT officer saying I was 1/8" over width:rolleyes:.

The road we delivered on earlier this week. You can't tell from the pics, but it was crazy steep with probably a 40-50 foot drop down to a river on the left! The only time I REALLY wished my truck was 4wd.
