What year did Cummins, Detroit, Int'l, and Cat start utilizing emmisions on their Class 7/8truck engines? I'm thinking '04 for egr equipped engines but not sure on the Cat Acert engines. In my search I want to stay away from these, unless I find a crazy deal on one.

The Acert motors started in 06 thats the motor thay have all the problems out of but the egr started in late 03 i have seen some 04s non egr i think that had something to do with the make of the truck cat was always behind on anything That flatbed has a all mechanical motor its a 96 everyone else was in 94 just make sure its a single turbo cat

02/03 was the split on the emission regs taking over. Mine is a single turbo 2003 CAT C12, but has some emissions programming in the ecm(2KS serial #). Though NO EGR valve. The Acerts rolled out late '03 on the C13/15. The Acerts are a workable motor as long as the serial # begins with BXS or MXS. The NXS is the '07 with the DPF & killed any remaining hope. All acerts are twin turbo, so easy to spot, just check the serial # with any CAT authorized dealer.

I was as anti CAT as one could get when I started looking around. The more I started talking/learning/reading, they are not such a bad thing. There are guys with tuned C13's rolling 80,000#'s averaging mid 7's-8 mpg, acerts just have to be driven different to get the turbos wound up.

12.7 Detroits are as simple as one can get, hard to find low mile ones when I was looking. Looked at a N14 Cummins, but the truck was junk/scary. The first ISX's I read about were in the shop w/emissions stuff & would not touch a Volvo motor. But that is me.

Most all the pre egr stuff has had the wheels run off of them by now, so it is going to be tough shopping. Really interested to see where the SCR 2011 stuff works/holds up over the years. Probably will never own one, but it has to be better than ANYTHING prduced between 2007-2010.

Yeah,I'm finding the same thing out. I have found a few older N-14's that were decent but really don't need that big of a bore not to mention the fuel mileage would suffer. I know they are good engines. The M11's are hard to find and most of the Detroit 12.7's have tons of miles. Glad to see your C12 has been good to you. Thanks for the input guys
