Why can't trailer manufacturers build light weight step decks for the smaller medium duty trucks? Such as Lightweight beams with holes like the big boys. I don't understand why a 20k GVW rated trailer weighs 10k & a 80k GVW trailer weighs around 10,500lbs in the same configuration. I always found this a little odd. I understand stress points, being robust enough. But it seems you could build a trailer that weighed 7500#'s that was rated to haul 20k with a little effort. You would sell the crap out of them even if they cost more. I have a trailer designed on CAD that if I ever get built would be extremely versatile. Boats, Cars, Freight with a 27" deck height and 15k dual tandems. I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it?

I can build a drop deck for a 1 ton that weighs less than 8k BUT no one wants to pay for them
the materials cost 1/4 more , the labor is intensive and expensive and the wait time to receive the materials (main frame I beam) is 6 weeks making it over 2 months to get your trailer rolling.
as it is , start to finish a 24k drop deck is rolled out in 10-15 working days , cost less and is less hassle.
no one want's to pay todays price as they are built , I can not imagine adding another 4-6,000.00 to the price.
we try to build them as light as possible but durable . I have the reputation in this business that I do for a reason , they don't come back broken , twisted , swaying or bent.
been doing it over 20 years and beleive me , I have tried everything in the book to build them lite weight and make them work.

Thanks, so you think it could be built (53' stepdeck) for around $15k and have it weigh around 8k. Just curious. I have been modifying my 08 loadmax for a while but am considering selling it and having a trailer built to my specs. Maybe over the winter I'll get with you. I could handle waiting 2 months as long as it was light & had all the stuff I wanted.

No , it can not be built for 15k , my 53' plain step decks start at 16k .
these are not your run of the mill , cheap , junk built , mexican labor run 20 of them out a day trailer. ask anyone that has one , new or used.
a well built 40' gooseneck on 10k's and springs weighs allmost 9k.

My Imperial when it was a 40'GN with 2-12k SS and Hyraulic beavertail with wench weighed about 10k.
If your shop is a low production shop and your workers speak English, well I would think the workmanship is worth the Price. A 8k steel 53' SD would be impressive. And worth much more than 15k.
