What are the requirements to run in New York over 54,999? I have avoided the place because of the HUT thing & just not worth something else to screw with if it is not a regular run? Besides the tolls are insane & it is another anti idle state.

However I don't see the HUT tags plastered on trucks much these days. Did they get rid of it, or is it like the KYU number that is attached to your DOT number?

Nevermind, just found my answer.

http://www.tax.state.ny.us/e-services/oscar/pginfofaqs.htm#hut

What is HUT?

New York State imposes a highway use tax on motor carriers operating certain motor vehicles on New York State public highways. The highway use tax is a weight-distance tax, computed based on mileage traveled by motor vehicles on New York State public highways at a rate determined by the weight of the motor vehicle.

Who is required to register for HUT?

The following motor vehicles are subject to the truck mileage tax Certificate of Registration requirements :

Any truck, tractor, or other self-propelled vehicle with a gross weight of more than 18,000 pounds
Any trailer, semi trailer, dolly, or other drawn vehicle transporting automotive fuel that has a gross weight of more than 18,000 pounds
If a carrier uses the unloaded weight method to calculate the truck mileage tax, any truck with an unloaded weight of more than 8,000 pounds and any tractor with an unloaded weight of more than 4,000 pounds are also subject to the truck mileage tax Certificate of Registration requirements

Do you really have to get a NY State Tax ID to get screwed on a mileage-weight tax? Really?

http://www.tax.state.ny.us/e-services/oscar/pginfofaqs.htm#hut2

What is required to use OSCAR?

You must be currently registered in New York for IRP, IFTA, HUT or DOT
You must have a USDOT number
You must have a New York State Taxpayer Identification Number

It is becoming sooo not worth messing with any of it!

Also, noticed on the Rand McNally Atlas that there aren't any or many official scales throughout the state. So where are the check points? I know a heavily taxed & regulated state is not going to let people roam around for nothing if they can manipulate more out of them.

At the rest stops east and west bound ny they have mobile units which 85% of time from what we notice nobody home. The rest area sign will have a weigh station sign with it. But as for the looks of a weigh station, there isnt any looks, it looks like a normal rest area. Dont even think they have a little shack anywhere. out of all 30 plus inspections my single truck has had, dont think any were in NY. And we do alot of miles in NY

If you read down further on that page you don't have to pay HUT if you stay on toll roads which is the majority of the lovely tri-state area! Not sure about secondary roads ... where there are NO scale houses! :p

Having lived in NY 48 years you will never find a weight station, the DOT (state troopers) carry portable scales. Most of the time you will only ever see them is on the federal safety week.
Hut doesn't apply to toll roads. If your getting off for delivery and back on the toll road secondary don't count.

Brad, our thoughts on the matter:

a) FEDERAL Authority is not good enough for NY.
b) NY touches Canada
c) NY touches the Atlantic Ocean.

a+b+c=FUNY

Any state which thinks they are so above it all that my Federa DOT numbers are not good enough can kiss my (wide) ass... We figured since NY goes from Canada (where we don't go into) all the way to the Atlantic, it made a nice dividing point! Neither of us like running back east with all the toll roads anyway...

Oh I would rather avoid it like the plague & have aside from one Long Island excursion a couple years ago. This summer, the midwest is spotty & have watched NY stay steady both inbound & out. I totally got rid of everything north & east of N.Y. off of the IRP to eliminate any thought of going farther up there.

Am confused though by what you mean with the Federal Authority issue?

As far as the Atlantic, kind of dig that, but from the coast around Kitty Hawk, N.C.:) One place I wish I could have stopped for a day or two instead of having to roll through.

Coop, you run NY right? What do the smaller trucks like yours have to do out of the ordinary to run there? Seems like some good paying loads running there and back from my area.

NYHUT... simple form, but not immediate.
If you leave the toll roads, you better have it.
Some get lucky, but most do not... better to have it. I think it was $20 when I got it, but I don't recall offhand since most try to avoid NY ;)

Well, I thought I didnt have to have hut, but appearently I do. Guess I better get it. I do travels all thru ny, spend alot of time in buffalo/rochestor, but been to basically all spots on the map in ny. Even up north champlin and around the lake placid area. dont have anything for it now other then irp and ifta, no different then any other state.

Like I said before, never even had a inspection in NY. Not that I can think or see in safestat.

Um, did get pulled over in new york city though with 4 police cruisers on the trailer. Yah, seriously.. It was with the stacker trailer. Fully dressed cars. I dont know if they were for the polic or a personal buyer as we seem to do a few police cars. But no tickets were given. Actually, to make matters even worse, i think we even picked up the cars in east ny which is a big no no in any state other then your base state???

That's it? No bullshit taxes etc? The fuss must just be 0ver 54,999 lbs. I could probably just run a trip to the east coast and back once a week and make a living lol.

Like I said, none that I know of. Been doing it for over 3 years. Maybe lucky, maybe not, but for how cheap the hut is, I might as well do it. And of course to be legal if thats what it calls for. Last I checked PA is the expensive state for taxes. (ifta)

I ran HUT, but if i remember correctly, i got a letter stating that I no longer needed it?? (maybe it was a dream?) but we've never been hassled, ive got a truck there every single week. as a matter of fact, we just got an inspection on 09-10-10 and passed with flying colors.

Decals are no longer needed to display but still require to file. I think hut is $15 from a quick google search.

I thought it was a 54,999 issue as well, but look again at post number two in this thread... That came directly from their site. Not sure what the fines are vs. actually paying the tax.

Fines are 100-200 dollars, hut requires filing mileage every quarter same as IFTA. Paper work stays in main office no sticker anymore. In NY hut starts at 10000 gvw or 18000 gvw if I remember it is lower than 54000.
