Just done one to Dickinson ND and another to Eugene, Or

Now Im home till after my kids court on aug.9th The truck is hangin in there. Had some heating problems. I switch the thermostat and coolant sensor on the road. I think my fan clutch is going bad. Its making a singing like noise over 2000 rpm only when the fan is on. I bet the clutch is slipping in it. Prolly have to throw some money at it this week. lol This dang truck is a money pit. Everyone who tells me these high mileage stories with no repairs are full of bs. My truck needs 1000 bucks thrown at it every month. Been that way all year.

Yea I have no money to be buying another truck. If I make any changes I will just go back to being a trucker. I could have a job in mere seconds.

I can certainly sympathize. My Ford was that way.

I was reviewing my maintenance records on the way home from Colorado and realized I was at 200,000 miles on the idle pulley, 137,000 on the fluid change on transfer case, and front pumpkin has 100,000.

Not to jack this thread, but at just 180,000miles on a 08 4500, I am learning how many $$ and time for maintance it takes to keep the little truck on the road. Stuff just doesnt last.

I really dont spend money on my truck. Althought this trip has been troublesome. about 3 out weeks I have gone thru 5 trailer tires at 160 a peice, just blew a rear caliper this morning at 59 bucks, but only about 400 miles from home so I just had him clamp the line and blew a ujoint at 90 buck. Got lucky there with the joint, pulled over at autozone, and saw a mobile unit drive by and charged me 60. Other then that, I really never work on my truck. Its not a money pit by no means at all. I agree stuff doesnt last, but are we talking about normal wear and tear items?? ujoints are expected to go here and there, brake pads at 50 bucks, ac compressors, etc. Thats all really cheap stuff. Only expensive reapair ive had over a few hundred dollars was my transmission which should of lasted alot longer. Granted im at the 300k mark now, so im expecting my luck to start changing with the more expensive repairs, but keep in mind I do everything myself too.

I guess its the luck of the draw. Im not saying little trucks are awesome, because I still want cosgos!!! hehe

I found I have about a 1 and 1/2 inch crack in my exhaust manifold today too. Its right above the outlet on the manifold. I think I may let that go awhile. Prolly put a ATS manifold on it sometime. Prolly will do a new turbo and all while Im at it.

My truck has 356k on it. I feel it has needed much more work than average. But who knows. Im also very picky and tend to replace parts before they fail. I will head out after the 9th. Still dont want to quit. The freedom I have doing this is nothing like trucking. Just makes me mad when I go home for a week and have to spend 1/2 the time making love to my truck. Gets to a guy from time to time.

My fan isnt gone yet. Its tight and works fine unless Im grossing say 23k or more. I think I may just let er go till next summer. The thing rarely comes on after september. I think I'll just keep an eye on it.

My water pump is original. I think I may pull it and see if I see anything weird. Maybe the impeller is lose, who knows.

I had to run to NM today to pick up a friend. Temp never got over 205. Coming back from oregon it stayed at 205 too. Its just when I pull them big Landmarks and Cyclones I have trouble. My temp was going to 235 or so on monutain passes. I would have to back out of it and drop a gear or two and it would cool right back down.

We are staying plenty busy. Havent had to wait yet. Been getting the next dispatch when I deliver. Im generally 2-3 days from even picking the next one up when I get dispatched. So all is well as far as biz goes. Just had to vent a lil, lol

Take Care All!

My idler pulley was at 238k and was still barely hangin in there. I just done all the bearings then, fan hub, idler and tensioner bearings. Cost like 100 bucks. I carry a spare idler bearing now.

I change my transfer case at 50k. Im due for a new chain in it. I have a bunch of play in the front driveshaft. Prolly will do bearings then too. Figured maybe october I will rebuild it. Once that chain hit the case the whole thing needs replaced. I figure for 300 I can rebuild it. Rebuilt T cases are 1200 or so. I change my front pumpkin at 100k too. I run 1/2 lucas synthetic and atf+4 in my transfer case. Seems to work good, but who knows you got another 100k on yours medic and run the oil way longer than me. Your prolly the smart one here, lol

Yea Haulin, I have been carrying one under my bed since 100k. I think I turn the factory one into the spare. Your right I think it was like 48 bucks with tax at napa.

I run Royal Purple in my pumpkin and synthetic atf in the tranny.

Tranny is at 350,000 miles.

I guess I should get the book out and post the dates, miles and services.

Big tickets I remember are the tranny was at 147,000 while under a load.
Ball joints were at 66,000 I think or may have been right after the tranny at 166.
Next big item was the injectors at 406,000.

I run Rotella and try to change before 10,000.
I target the tranny for 50,000 and last was 75,000.

I run the tires at 65 on the front and 55 on the rear.

I try to avoid the larger units since we are paid the same for all. My experience over the years with the larger units is nothing more than increased cost of repairs and maintenance issues.

We get like 7 cents extra. Is it worth it? Prolly not...

I much prefer the big ones though because they have nice suspensions and those 14 ply G rated goodyears on them. Not gonna have a tire issue with em. Fuel mpg is same in the summer. I give 1 mpg or so in winter.

Review your maintenance costs and you will find they cost you money.

I have been doing this since 2003. I have an accounting background so the numbers are easy to me.

I used to pull some of the big 5er's. It just doesn't pay. All I pull now is TT 32' or shorter. Me and the truck like it much better. 413,000 on the ole dodge.

Well, switched out the water pump, and pulled all the radiators. I backwashed the outside. The water radiator was pretty much plugged. The water ran black coming out of the front side of the fins. The air to air was very dirty too. Bet my truck runs cool now.

Hey all!!!!Its about time I joined everyone again from the old site!!!!Thanks Carey!...How's the injectors doing? Glad to see u r spending time at home. Ollen has been home quite a bit since our son got out of the army & moved home. Been getting his old truck ready to hopefully sign on with a company, since jobs are scare around here.

We cant complain at all about putting money into our 03...its been a good one...until it hit 500k we only put a clutch & fuel pump in it...now at i think around 700k we have rebuilt the trans...fan clutch motor...another clutch...needing synchro kit at the moment.
