I changed insurance companies this year and I got them to send out certificates to numerous companies. I thought I had gotten them to take care of all the paperwork that needed to be done and then today I discovered that FMCSA has revoked my operating authority because though they filed my liability insurance they didn't file the cargo insurance with the feds. I have gotten them to do the filing, but does anyone know if I need to do anything else to get it reinstated? Also any ideas how long it will take?

And Today's News ::

6/24/2010 FMCSA to Eliminate Cargo Insurance Requirement

Starting March 21, 2011, for-hire carriers and freight forwarders will no longer be required to maintain a minimum in cargo insurance, according to a final rule issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Tuesday. Carriers and freight forwarders will also no longer need to file evidence of this insurance with the FMCSA.

The new rule does not apply to household goods carriers and freight forwarders, however.

The FMCSA gained jurisdiction over motor carrier and freight forwarder cargo insurance with the enactment of the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act of 1999. FMCSA continued to register carriers as either "common' or "contract' under the transition rule because the agency had not yet implemented the new unified registration system. In the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) designed to implement this new system, the agency proposed to eliminate the cargo insurance requirement for all motor carriers and freight forwarders except those involved in the transportation of household goods for individual shippers.

Aint that some $hit!!! If I read this right, Any Idiot can haul without cargo Ins. and untill something goes wrong, nobody would know. That would put a few more legitimate carriers out of business.

Thanks for the information and help. The only thing I have had a problem with is that they need a pin for both numbers and I only have a pin for my DOT number. I was told that the MC didn't have pins until more recently so I have to wait for them to mail me a pin or I can file by fax. I will use the fax.

What is this about not having to file your insurance after next March. Could any idiot haul stuff without proper insurance, if so this going to open the flood gates for illegal haulers.

I wouldnt think it would have any direct effect. liability is the premium cost of insurance and that will still need to be filed. Sure anybody can haul off uship but brokers and big business will still require a cert holder for both insurances.

Yeah, but now your gonna get one wise ass guy who has a cargo policy, and he is going to "loan" it to 50 of his friends and they will all be running on the one policy (till something goes wrong)

Well, this morning about 7:30 or 7:45, I checked the FMCSA site and I am active again. Now I am getting loaded and back on the road.

Thanks,
