After only 251,000 miles I had to put on some front pads. Junk Dodge, my Chevy still had the originals at 285,000 when I sold it:p.

If they weren't making noise, you could've got 290k out of them. P.M., what's that, drive it till it breaks or doesn't stop then fix it.:D
I have about 160,000 on mine & would replace them if I were to put another trailer behind it. They are not squeaking & plenty of material left, but may have been warm a time or two in the hills.

What are you guys running for replacement brakes? I haven't been able to get more than 20,000 miles, sometimes less on a set of aftermarket brakes. Is that normal on a 3500.
Thanks,
Steve

Going to dodge they have 2 different types. Both oem, but 1 is budget and 1 is same as new. Budget is $50 and normal is $100. Budget lasts me about 50k and normal lasts me 100k. Ive tried the wagner heavy duty at auto parts stores $65 and they last about long as budget.
20k miles seems like you have bad trailer brakes. I dont know how haulin and everybody else gets alot more miles, but I tow alot heavier and like to use more of truck brakes then electric brakes on trailer since truck brakes are alot cheaper the trailer brakes.

I have 150k on a set of autozone gold front pads. My brake OE pads were chipping away at 200k on the leading edge of the pad so i replaced them.
Autozone has a lifetime warranty. So you will only buy them once. They are about 45 bucks for a set. Yes prolly not for commercial, but the parts guys tell me, they dont care.
I still have about 1/2 of material left.
Yeah our POS dodges are brake eaters comparred to Chevs.

A friend of mine was having the same issue, 18-20,000 on a 2500 & he would be replacing pads. It was a '96 that he used around the farm, actually it was a Pace truck out of Indy with the V-10. Anyway, he had to rebuild the front end last winter & found out Auto Zone had given him the wrong pads. They fit 'n all, but weren't the right ones.

Nope, not normal.
On my 2004 Dodge 3500 Dually, I got 160K out of my front brake pads until I had them replaced and my back pads were still at 50%.
Hopefully your issues are elsewhere and not with the trucks brakes, know what I mean. I agree with others here, have your trailer brakes and trailer wiring checked out thoroughly before digging into the trucks braking system.

That's absolutely crazy.......
That's like Schnieder or Stevens Transport, as an example, setting up the braking systems on their "Trucks" to handle the stopping power for that 60K trailer they're towing.
You're driving a truck that weighs in around 7500lbs pulling a loaded trailer that could easily weigh 20-25,000lbs fully loaded. And you prefer to use the braking system designed to stop 11-12,000lbs to stop 30,000++lbs over a braking system (the trailers brakes) that is designed to stop that loaded trailer plus 50% of your trucks weight just to save money???
Sometimes I just don't understand your thinking.................

I have been running the Autozone Gold and yes they have replaced them under warranty, but having to deal with them going out that often is alot of trouble. It maybe the trailer brakes aren't doing enough of the stopping. I agree with you coop I would prefer to replace truck brakes than trailer brakes. I am going to be home and replace ball joints, rotors, and pads this weekend. I wouldn't mind if they would last 50k, but every 6 - 8 weeks is really annoying. I have wondered about going with ceramic, but don't know if that is the best thing to do. I do know that compared to some one thing is that I run PA and NJ alot, not much flat ground so that would affect the brakes, but not that bad. How long do you get out of the trailer brakes, I am running the dual tandem, but am going to start running a tri-axle, just haven't been home much to get it ready to roll.
Thanks for all the responses,
Steve

Mine went 251k on the front.
That was during the "RV" days, right?
Are you watching them closer since you've been hauling heavier now that you're out of RVs and into Auto Hauling?
I bet you'll see a change, know what I mean.

Part of how the RV guys get the life out of there brakes is that not only are they running less weight, but they're bobtailing half the time. Also I definitely agree that it is not worth running something unsafe just to save money on trailer brakes.

Who said anything about unsafe. Its called the hit of a button on the brake controller to boost the gain or boost. And yes I do think weird sometimes, glad you noticed!!!! Just like with all new hubs and brakes on it now. Drive with less gain and boost 2 in the city, but on hwy turn it up. Not only do I save trailer brakes, i dont get jerked around in traffic because the trailer brakes work so good!!!! Not once did i ever say i drive with no trailer brakes, only when they are broken!!! hehe

I didn't say you were doing anything unsafe, just that nobody would want to do anything unsafe to save the trailer brakes. Yes you can increase the power to the trailer brakes when needed.
