I worked for a guy hauling meat for a while. The truck was a 280 wheelbase KW 900L with the studio sleeper. It had a C16/600 in it.

We had it dyno'd one day.. 551 hp and 2450 torque at the rear wheels. That baby just mowed down the hills. The twin vortox air cleaners would whistle so loud from the intake of air I would have to have the windows shut. The boost gauge was in the low 40's psi turbo boost.

Id guess these trucks are running 1000 hp and prolly pushing 4000 torque.

But that KW could easilly keep up with cars when bobtailing. I wouldnt even use the low range side of the 18 speed tranny.

I was getting mid 5's with it. Might have done better but I had to lay down some pavememnt every week with that truxk. It had a 120 mph speedo. It would just go right past that like it was nothin.

Thanks for posting... Cool videos!

mid 5's? wow impressive for a c16. and 2450 to the wheels is insane!

The truck you see racing in the videoes is running 2400 HP, not TQ, you figure the TQ range would maybe be in the 6000 TQ. Its says this right on the homepage of erics site. Well not the torque part, guess they dont make dynoes that powerful??? Or maybe just blow the rollers out of the ground.

The only way this could be done is with progressive shifting. The engine would never be turned more than 1450 or 1500 rpm before shifting to the next gear.

Having an 18 speed allowed that. I would let the engine come down to 1000 rpm on hills before down shifting.

I also drove a C15 550 in a freightshaker. It had 3.70's and an 18 speed. I seen mid 6's with that truck. Also shfted it the same.

It layed down 501 hp and 2250 on the dyno. It was a fast truck too. My KW had 3.36 gears so being I had 3.70's it felt about the same as far as acceleration. But about 100 mph was all she'd run. never did find out how fast that KW would go. lol

Those engine are low winders and makle all there power below 1500 rpms. So if you stay in the power band and dont wind it, they are capable of pretty incredible mpg.

Had a C12 that I put 1 million miles on and got a steady 7.5 mpg with it pulling a dry 1000 cube cement tank at 75 mph on a 115 mile one way run everyday. It was a ten speed but I still never turned it much past 1600 rpms.

The C series cats are the best on road diesel engines out there. The power they make for the mpg they return is incredible.

I only run mine at 1300 RPM all day just purring and sipping fuel.

I was in Cat shop 1 day, a guy came in with a peterbilt dropped to the ground chopped cab and sleeper,341" wheelbase, full stainless on the top of the frame, had not finished the inside yet, had to leave to run a load, had blew a water pump, he was from Canada, used to have a website where him and his buddies had these decked out semis called xhst.com(not active anymore), anyways as soon as Cat got it up and running they dynoed it, the dyno could not load the truck down , it kept running through the load, a few weeks later I was coming up the summit out of Laramie no trailer doing 80 and this guy went flying by me and he was fully loaded, awesome truck.

Don't you have that freightliner condo that's been converted to a single axle? Are you only getting 7 mpg? How fast are you running?
