Talked with a S. driver tonight at the motel. If you think you have it bad, spend a little time with one of these guys. Takes home $600 a week, gone for up to 2 months at a time, sits for days on end. At the end of the conversation He said "I'm going to the bar" & I said "you should be" (but was thinking how can you afford that with a wife & kid at home". I felt bad for him but I guess at least he's working. Funny how you think your life sucks & you talk with someone that has it rougher than you. At which point you realize things aren't that bad in your little world.

A close friend of mine started with CRST and it was they same but this was 15 years ago and he was lucky to have $300 a week. They promised 2-3 weeks out and more money, so after over 2 months out he was withing a few hundred miles of his home terminal and he detoured and parked the truck and quit. Good move for him he got in with a good company (teamsters) and has now ended up a union rigger make some great money.

Sounds like ME! I started with Swift pulling doubles for $.18 a mile and a $.02 bonus for staying under 57mph. I was a little dumber than most though. I stayed with them for 7 years. The first 2 were long haul 11 western and the last 5 was local San Francisco/Sacramento valley pulling 57 1/2' super size can vans.

I started by making .09 cents a mile. Was the trainee on a team run from Flint, Mi. To Terrytown, NY. Hauling GM car parts.

Truck.. 1984 freighliner cab over, 290 cummins, with a 9 speed and 4.11 gears. Top speed wound out at 1900 was 60 mph.

I had to strap myself in while sleeping. Roughest truck I have ever been in. Oh yea, no power steering either.

Done this for 6 months. The whole time we were on this eastern run.. I lived in Colorado. Made it home twice. My wife never recovered.. Divorced 3 yrs later.

Couldnt take anymore so I quit. lol When I quit I was making .11 cents a mile.. Average pay was .19-.20 cents a mile for a truck driver. 1987. As usual I always make less than the avg person.. Until now! I haul rv's, lol:D

Cripes, I make more than $600 a week without even getting out of bed from the VA.

I won't stay out on the road unless I am clearing at least double that.
