How do i go about getting permits to run a 10' wide load cross country? Any suggestions, or good permit agencies you can recommend?

You have to get a seperate permit for each state you will be traveling in. I dont know of a good permit service. Perhaps someone else?

I found a federal site with the phone numbers to all the states for the permits, i was just hoping that there was one central place i could go to get them all at once vs. calling each state individually.

Check out garys site. He posted a permit service that he likes. 1 call does it all.

Cosgo, I use a permit nservice. Call 800- 373-9033 ext. 18. They charge $13.50 per state. Some states you can order yourself some you need a permit service. Since I get a lot of them it's just easier to call them & let them do it all at once. Call if you have any ?'s.

I used the service sheamus refered to for a GA intrastate OD single trip permit for 3 poly tanks(119" diameter)(one pick up with two drops). I thought that this would be one permit. Either each drop counts for a trip in itself or I got took by that sweet sounding girl on the other end of the phone. Any ideas on why I got two permits for this load? Anyone with experience on OD loads please get me up to speed here before I end up under bidding another job.

You need two permits as she gave you unless the drops are on the same route. OS are single trip permits. The only time I have not had to pull two permits (with two drops) was when I was able to drop at a location along the permitted route to the final location. It hardly ever works out, but sometimes you get lucky.

Doing some research, I found this site. Its pretty cool, tells you each states regulations, requirements, phones numbers. Everything you need to know. I called up the 1 permit service listed above ext 18 emily I believe. They charge 20 per state plus state fees. Anywho,
http://www.wideloadshipping.com/html/wideload_shipping_com_state_re.html.

Got a question, I will have banners, i will have flags. reading most states no night driving, I will have a 9.9 wide load fl to wa.

I have a set of $150 roof mount amber stobes for towtrucks. Will this work instead of the spinner type light amber???

I was thinking get a few permits every morning during the trip, keep roof mount amber strobes on during vehicle movement, keep headlights on, and follow directions via website posted and I should be ok. Unless there is something else im missing??? might even have a 11 wide next trip. I know 12 and up starts escorts so 11 should be the same as a 10 wide. Guess I can mark the rand mcnally gps for 10 wide also see if thats different milage. Anywho, any tips, i would like to start getting into boat hauling oversize loads. Anywho, pickup monday, aiming to drop off friday morning time. Guess WA has some nice dreamy oversize load laws to what the website says. Nice to know since if there is any delays, he would be in WA by then. Man, these oversize laws are restrictive compared car hauling. Maybe I should of quoted more... hehe

Doing more research, is Cali the only state the requires a escort from 10.1 to 12 from what I noticed??? The 11 wide I might do is going to cali.

Quick fab up. Welded on, but still have use of tow hooks for when I get stuck in the winter.. Now I just gotta rig up my sign next.. Bought the poles at northern tool for $3.99 each. A little torching and welding and paint (kinda excessive on 1). I think it looks ok for a 20 minute job.

Coop I have done a couple of wide loads out west here(under 10'). And I have always just put some small lights on all 4 corners of the load if running at night. Cool web site.

Each state will dictate what time of day you can run (some states allow night travel with special lighting). It will tell you on your permits. That might be a good website but follow the directions on the permit as this is what matters. Also the permit will dictate the route you travel not you GPS or what you think works. Make sure your flags are as wide as your load because you can be ticketed for this. Run the Oversize side of the banner out as most states require it to say Oversize not overwidth. Some states are okay with the overwidth sign but not all (yes, I've been ticketed for that before, pretty stupid if you ask me).Make sure you can see all the way behind you in your side view mirrors (10' wide should be okay but 12' you will need mirror extensions) as this is something they love to shut you down for. Every state is different on its requirements for escorts pertaining to the roads they route you on. I would order your permits as early as possible as certain states take longer than other (WV can take 3 days for instance). You should be fine but make sure you read & sign your permits as they can be dicks about that also. You shouldn't have any problems 12' & under but when you get over that width it can be a real headache sometimes.

go red I used to live washington and the other route has you in some really desolate places. If you were to break down or have problems it would be harder to get help. I've driven the other route 3 times and it wasn't bad. There are some steep grades on either route but I'm sure you know that.

Go north to I80 in Neb. and then accross to Salt lake city and up. Thats the least mountains. Ive run that route accross 80 probably 50 times. Whats your weight going to be? You may need a trip permit through Oregan.

Entering AL, got the bypass but DOT came running outside and stopped us at the scalehouse in the bypass lane. didnt take long to get asked for permits. but 15 miles. lol, wonder if its going to be like this every coops house. hopefully we can make it to tx border near shreveport before sunset because tx is a wonderful state where you can drive at nighttime under 10 feet wide. Oh yeah, taking the south route tx to amarillo thru oklahoma into colorado, should be staying around denver prolly for tuesday night. Then north to Wyoming and east on I80 to salt lake city.

The most I've been stopped in one state was 3 times, good ole' Ohio. Look closely at your permits bud, they may say you have to stop to show them your permits whether your red lighted or night. Mi is big on this one.

Stopped in mississippi, got the red x, weighed at the coops house, (no pun intended), and greened.

I think I might have a 2009 baha 35 coming back to miami from sacromento. Gotta get 200k insurance though. Not fun since my policy ends the 19th and I will be picking it up on the 16th if all goes well. My broker is having fun with that now.
Anywho, here are some pics, there was no other way to mount rear banner nicely, then mentioned he was gonna duck tape it up, but i said no for claims reasons. Thats how I ripped off my paint on the back left side of my cab when I blew out my rear window from no fender covers. oops

Remember i wrote that 1 post about the shipper and carrier asking for DOT#'s, carrier said no, but shipper asked again when you could pick it up??? Well, guy came back to me anyways later on in the day. Guess he smartened up and didnt want to get screwed on his nice boat. His first email to me was hope you know Im paying double for you what I could of payed everybody else... Make sure to check his last shipment with 8 or so bids with it still active. Guess he never cancelled. Lost his money from deposit on uship and maybe carrier??

Anywho, my response was "yess I know your paying more then double from all your previous bid on both shipments, but im sure your aware that im the only legal carrier out of all those other bids. Anywho, 6 state permits done, up to colorado, 5 to go, at $220 so far in permits, gosh $60 for texas, and 2 states already had to hire permit services. And $43 for oklahoma for the 10 miles i have to drive thru it, lol. Its a gamble taking this boat out west, especially with the rush service im doing for free, would of been nicer having 30 days, but the experience is great, less work I have to do at home for my truck. And if I get this baha coming home, it will make this trip perfect. not to mention the 13mpg is pretty nice. Might only cost $650 in fuel to drive cross country at 13 mpg.

Anybody got experience with the west and where to find towable units??? or who to call?? Boat manufactures, other load boards??? Think this baha is falling thru, to much logistics involved i guess as its going overseas, and prolly wont be ready in time. "Hate how brokers post that crap up and its not ready" Anywho, Im sure I can grab something off ucrap, but prolly wouldnt do anymore then $2500 going $3000 miles. Its amazing the crap on that site, they are begging to move big heavy wide loads on trailers for 1 dpm. Crap, I feel I should of made more on my boat shipment.

Either way nice experience doing this, wont do again though. Odds are coming back is cheap to nothing, even with 15 days notice. I can make alot more car hauling.

Anywho, any ideas on west to east loads for towable units??? 5th wheel, boats, circus equipment!!! lol

I got my eye out on CD, and can put small stuff together, but would prolly take to much time, would rather just come pick up the stacker and get back to real work instead of piddelying around with this dingy!!!!! Getting stopped at every dang weigh station almost, and nobody is even coming outside to say hi, at least they could do is give me an inspection to raise my score a little bit!!!
