I got a letter from my insurance company today saying that my MCS 150 form needs to be updated, as theyve announced that hauling cars is a class 9 hazmat load!!! They told me to update my MCS and up my insurance to 1 million vs. 750k (ive had 1 million all along anyways) or my insurance will be suspended.
I called my permit lady, and she did some research and told me that apparently, this has been the rule the whole time but is seldom enforced.
Anyone hear of this??

When I started in 2007 the auditor from MODOT told us that cars were class 9simply because they had tanks that could contain fuel or perhaps be packed with ANFO (al la OK City bomber).
I thought it odd that they are considered low level of HazMat and I asked how come we didn't have to have a HazMat endorsement. I believe he said that class 7 and below (or above I guess, as in 7-9) do not require a HazMat endorsment on your CDL, but are still classified as such.
I've also had $1M all along as it was virtually the same price as $750k.

I received a letter from the DOT stating the same thing about a year ago I carried 1M insurance the insurance company filed my 150 wrong (750) I asked them about it they changed it I didn't have to pay for it again even though they did try to charge me for it was their mistake not mine.

I barely mentioned possibly hauling cars and my insurance wanted to up my rate like crazy when I got a quote, she mentioned they were a hazmat load as well, how ridiculous can you get, I think considering it as a hazmat load is a little too much.

Speaking of ins it is CRAZY the difference in price between agents/companies. I got many quotes and just starting out (no experience commercially) I received them from over 10k per year to 6.9k per year. The higher ones had less cargo and an operating restriction also, go figure. I ended up paying 570$ per month and that includes 1 mill liability, 150k cargo, 2mill general liability and an extra 1mill umbrella since I'm a sole prop. This was also with equipment stated value at 80k. Not bad
