I was loading up at IAA the other day and a guy comes in with a Dodge 3500/Take 3 with front and rear flips. He has 4 cars on and it says GVWR 35000 on the door of the truck. He has no IFTA stickers and no apportioned plate. I asked him why he didn't have an IFTA sticker and he answered "whats IFTA? He said he had gone from MA to FL and beeninspected several times and not had a problem. Am I missing something?

wow...one of my trucks got puled for an inspection in NC Thurday. Driver said the officer even wanted to see the IFTA license paper. That guy is one of the reasons the hotshot trucks have such a bad rep. It makes all of us who do it right look bad.

Every time I've been called into a scale they want to see the cab card and IFTA

I have never had anybody ask for the IFTA cab card. Oh well as long as you are legal no need to worry.

He got lucky on his inspections. I doubt he's had more than a couple. He'll know what IFTA is soon enough.

I could pull out of my driveway and with my luck I would get nailed for it. I see them all the time without ifta...

I saw a truck at Manheim Atlanta with big letters "Under 26,000lbs." They loaded 3 Suburbans/Yukons on top and had a car in the belly. (4 car hauler) they had 26,000 in just vehicle weight not including the truck or trailer. Of course you couldn't tell the driver that because they probably wouldn't of understood English.
I wish the DOT would just go and sit outside of the auctions a few times.

No, you don't.
If you're not sure that you don't, go to Copart Newburg (NY) couse they are there 3 times a week and everone gets a ticket.

I hear those Newburgh DOT are nasty. They put a strait truck (day cab) out of service for no hotel receipt or either the hotel receipt didn't match with the log book. I'm trying to figure out how they ever seen a receipt though if that's the case.

Last time I was there (and I do mean LAST)the guy spent 45 min inspecting my truck, even went underneath and had me rock the steering to see if tie rods etc were good. Went back to his van and came back with a ticket for one of the 3 tailights in the middle of the rear of the trailer being out. I looked and all three were working. I went over and told him and he said "it wasn't when I checked it" I asked him to look again and he said he was too busy.
Another transporter witha brannd new $150k rollback got a ticket there because he had a bungee cord hanging on the truck that was not taught. They gave him "unsecured load" and put him out of service.

YES I do, they can hammer all the illegal carriers who are doing this for cheap $$$ and screwing the rest of us. When I see a carrier with big letters below his DOT# that says BELOW 26,000 lbs, then he loads a car and 3 big SUVs on a 4 car trailer behind a dually that hasn't seen soap and water since Reagan was in office, they need to have it run up their #@@ and broke off.

I agree. With all due respect to Mr C, DOT needs to sit outside of auctions now and again. I see Mitch's point, but he is talking about an isolated instance. Yes, there are bad DOT cops, and there are even bad offices where every one of them seems to have a chip on their shoulder. But by and large MOST of these guys are just doing their jobs and shit flows downhill. If their superiors are pushing them and giving them quotas to fill, they are going to write tickets...
I lived near a quarry and they were out there once or twice a month. I talked to one of them (by accident at a lunch counter and long before I started doing this) and he said it was because all of the dump trucks on the road that were not well maintained they focused on the quarry 3-4 days a month.
It would sure be nice if the DOT would actually put some real focus on taking out illegal carriers and the guys running well over 26k and claiming Not For hire... But that would involve a lot of extra work and paper work. Perhaps arrests and confrontations. Its a lot easier for some of these bad apples to write tickets for phantom light issues than actually take someone off the street.
Unfortunately its like living on a busy street where everyone runs 50 in a 30. You bitch and the city sends a traffic cop out and you end up getting a ticket for 33...

Perfect analogy. When they get complaints, cops are interested in showing that they did something to address the complaints, not to solve the problem itself. It's easier for them to grab everyone who even is slightly non complient, than to wait for the major culprits.
