U.S. Bans Texting by Truck and Bus Drivers
Violators using interstate roadways now subject to fines up to $2,750.
By Steven Reinberg, HealthDay Reporter
TUESDAY, Jan. 26 (HealthDay News) — Truck and bus drivers who travel interstate roadways are now banned from using a handheld device to send text messages, U.S. officials said Tuesday.

The ban, which is supported by the trucking and bus industry, goes into effect immediately, with violators subject to up to $2,750 fines, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said during a morning press conference.

"We said the federal government would do everything in its power to send a clear message that texting, talking and driving are potentially lethal activities with very serious consequences," LaHood said. "Today we are sending a strong message. We don't merely expect you to share the road responsibly with other travelers—we will require you to do so."

More than 500,000 people were injured and nearly 6,000 people were killed last year in motor-vehicle accidents involving a driver who was distracted while using a cell phone or texting device, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The hardest part of banning texting and talking on cell phones is enforcement, LaHood admitted. However, he noted that laws requiring seat belts and the laws against drunken driving were also hard to enforce at the start, but raising awareness has helped to get more people to use seat belts and not drive drunk.

LaHood hinted that the cell phone industry might find ways that would alert police that a driver was texting or talking on a cell phone.

Research from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration found that drivers sending and receiving text messages take their eyes off the road for about 4.6 seconds out of every 6 seconds while texting, Anne Ferro, the agency's administrator, said during the press conference.

At that rate, a driver going 55 mph would travel the length of a football field, including the end zones, without looking at the road, she said.

People who text while driving are 23 times more likely to get in an accident than nondistracted drivers, LaHood said. The agency is working on more regulation to reduce the use of cell phones and other electronic devices among interstate truck and bus drivers, Ferro added.

William P. Graves, president of the American Trucking Association (ATA), said during the press conference: "We realize that texting on a handheld phone or wireless device while driving substantially elevates the risk of being involved in an accident. ATA does support DOT's action to ban the use of handheld wireless devices by commercial drivers while driving to send or receive text messages."

In September, President Barack Obama signed an executive order prohibiting federal employees from using cell phones or sending text messages while driving government-owned vehicles or with government-owned equipment. The ban took effect Dec. 30, LaHood said.

Yet the 18 year old Bimbo Brandy can text from her Mustang while checking her make up. If it going to be banned it should be in ALL vehicles.

It doesn't take into account those of us that sometimes Team or have a passenger... but in any case, they would have to flag the drivers cell account as a truck or bus driver. And if its in his or company name only or the check with the cell company becomes illegal due to privacy, even during a suspected violator being stopped. Very problematic.

I get the whole text and drive thing but like mentioned above, it has to be for everyone.......

I also heard, CB gossip that when your health card comes due that if you are over weight they are giving you 3 months to get in shape or no card???

Mostly that is due to the increasing numbers of those with Sleep Apnea. If you are diagnosed with apnea, there are strict rules in regards to your card. As well as shorter time between expiration. But currently all rumors I believe since we haven't received actual notices about it.

In 2009, the physicians giving DOT physicals were given the power to make a judgement call on all CMV drivers whether or not to require a sleep depravation 'test' before they would even begin a DOT physical. The criteria was BMI [body/mass index] at borderline obesity, which is understandable to some degree, but ALSO determined by your neck size!!! {not all doctors practice this new power, yet}.
The clinic I go to, a very nice doctor, turned down 2 drivers just during the time I was in the lobby waiting for my physical [April '09].
Both drivers bobtailed to the clinic, had loads, but could not get new medical cards until they were tested for apnea ! No prior warning, and I cannot tell you how f##k@@# loud and pissed they were !!!!!!!!!!!
I asked the doc in private about it, the judgement call, and he said he had no choice but to enforce it, they were watching him like a hawk.

P.S. The doc also said he had issued quite a few '3 month' medical cards.

The investigation into the driver's actions at the time of the incident also revealed that he was using a lap top computer, which was on his lap, to stream pornographic movies while he was operating the truck.

That was part of the CB conversation, they said there will be 500,000 truck drivers losing their jobs....

When I was a child, we had steel dashboards in cars and no seat belts. We stood on the seat next to dad while he drove.
I thought the Illuminati wanted to kill most of us off ? If this is the case, then they should encourage everyone to surf porn with one hand, and 'shift' with the other !
WTF ?? Can't they get their ducks lined up?

I guess the 'upside' of all the increased regulation on Americans and the push for socialism and marxism is that we will finally get the fence built around our borders to keep out the illegals, one community at a time !
