Small town blues, brother

Elwood, IL, is one of several American towns reeling in big fines and big permit fees from truckers

By Charlie Morasch, staff writer

Few images are as ingrained in American highway lore as the backwater hamlet and its maze of speed traps. Foliage-covered truck route signs can hint at steep fines for violating local rules. Enforcing these regulations, of course, is the cop sporting reflective aviators and a shiny new patrol car purchased on the backs of out-of-town suckers.

Nothing slaps a driver back into reality, however, like paying $700 to drive less than two miles of road.

For OOIDA Member and veteran driver Walter Newburry, the hamlet in question is Elwood, IL, which requires anyone hauling overweight to buy a monthly permit for about $700 – even for a single trip.“There is only one road that it’s good for, and it’s only 1.7 miles long,” Newburry said. “I have to haul 10 boxes a week just to pay for my permit. And they tell you if you cause any damage to the road, you’re still responsible for the damage – so what does the permit do?”

Ever since the 2nd Intermodal yard opened in Joliet, the only I-55 access is via Elwood. Plus the back-and-forth traffic between yards...
Elwood has cracked down on everything. Hell, I used to get looked at seriously almost every time I left my house.

Being that I am around there and have to deal with the ignorant pos container haulers (most not all), I find it almost funny. Hope they force some the scum bags off the road and out of business.

I thought the same when I was right there. and having to deal with them barreling down my road. That and the the construction trucks flying by every few minutes... totally killed the quiet and comfortable feeling of living in the country. :(
Just wish they had done the same thing county-wide in the area for all the dump trucks... that would have made things a little quieter. :)

If the Port Authority has their way, Elwoods current cash cow will be over. But the point you guys are missing is that if they can do it to them, they can do it to any commercial unit they choose. It gets to be a slippery slope from that perspective. I do not have to deal with either, but have more respect for the container haulers than a city legally robbing WORKING people blind.

I get it, I was purely making light of the situation and venting my feelings about the particular types of drivers that run out of there.

But on a side note the county always has portable scales set up in the area too. And they get a large amount of these guys for running over weight too. Unfortunately the poor planning of the whole area has destroyed roads never intended for the weight and volume of the traffic. And then there is the whole traffic issue too.
