Any help would be nice helping me figure out how this works. I live in Georgia will go to the neighborhood of 40k and am curious how the fees work out. I plan on running the traditional southern states for now. My trailer is custom built wedge with 10k axles but with the weight of truck, trailer and load I might get to the 40k range. I hope this doesn't sound too stupid but I've never owned a truck that would put me in this weight territory.

Hey Micro,

Welcome to the forum. Not to chop your butts off. But it does help to know what state you are based out off(but I did read your from GA). So please update your profile for future help.

First, find out what is the GVWR on the truck and then the trailer.
For example,
Dodge 3500 have a GVWR of say 12,500k
trailer has a GVWR of (tandem) 20,000k
total is 32,500k
But here at the land of scandals ( illinois) I would register my truck for 36,000. Since that is the highest weight in the range I fall in and you want some leg room if you out grow your trailer and want a bigger one.

Different truck and/or trailer have different circumstances on what is put on your weight class. You might want to check out your DMV for exact numbers, I am only using the combo above as an example.

Just my .02
Pete

My truck is also apportioned at 36k. I'd say a safe bet is it will be in the $600 range.

I appreciate the help guys. I forgot to update my profile....sorry. I had a feeling that it would be high but 600 wouldn't be that bad. Thanks again.

Each of our 2 trucks running MO plates with the majority of the miles being in MO/IL and plated @ 36k runs between $450 and $500/year.

Note that I expect those costs to go up some for next year. That is because the first year of our operation I only ran about 60k (intrastate carrier MO only and starting from ZERO.) Last year I was closer to 95k but our other truck only ran about 45k (only worked 7 months of the year).

Once we have a year where both trucks run closer to 100k... ours will go up.

Buster, that seems like a TON of $$$$.

I guess you do run a lot of miles in CA based on your living there. That must inflate your cost quite a bit. Sure some of it is for the extra 4k in weight, but that's more than double what ours were when I renewed in Sept.

Funny though, I look at our cab cards and the part of the apportioned plate going to IL is more than double ANY other state!!

Welcome to California!! My insurance is high as well. My agent rights for other states. If I lived in Oregon, my insurance through the same agent and company would be $2500 a year less for the same exact coverage.

...when I renewed in Sept.

huh? most renew between Dec thru March 31st.

Wow.

Depending on when we plate a truck in IL, it is prorated quarterly with Feb being the cutoff since IL apportioned plates all expire March 31st. Plating a truck is cheapest Jan 1-Feb 28 since you are only paying 1 quarter, but come March you have to pay the full next year.

T,

MO does it in waves by calendar quarter and the plate can NEVER be good for more than 1 year. So the first year you typically end up paying for 10 or 11 months.

Since I bought my apportioned plates the first time in late Oct, I paid for 11 months (Oct-Sept) and my plates expire 9/30 every year.

Yeah, had I gone in on Oct. 1 and paid they would have charged for a full year and not prorated, but most folks don't get all their ducks in a row exactly at the start of a quarter!!

Yeah, I realize some states have differing renewal times. I just hadn't realized MO was on a rotation like that. Good to know.
